Girl beaten to death by relatives and hung from bridge for wearing jeans
A 17-year-old girl has allegedly been beaten to death by relatives because they didn't like her wearing jeans.
Neha Paswan is claimed to have been severely beaten with sticks by her grandfather and uncles after an argument over her western clothing in in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh in India.
Her tragic death comes as there have been a chilling catalogue of reports of girls and young women being brutally assaulted by family members in the Asian country.
Neha's heartbroken mum Shakuntala Devi Paswan, told BBC: "She had kept a day-long religious fast. In the evening, she put on a pair of jeans and a top and performed her rituals. When her grandparents objected to her attire, Neha retorted that jeans were made to be worn and that she would wear it.â
The grieving parent said the senior members of the family had objected to her "western clothes" which they saw as "inappropriate" and they insisted she wore more traditional clothing.

The following morning the distraught parents heard that a body of a girl was hanging from a bridge over the Gandak river.
The body was that of Neha.
A murder investigation has been launched by police and Neha's grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins and the auto driver are among the 10 people who have been arrested and questioned.
The autorickshaw driver is accused by police of trying to dispose of the body.
Photos of Neha show the teenager liked to wear modern clothes.
Nehaâs dad, Amarnath Paswan, a construction site worker in Ludhiana, said he had worked hard to be able to send his kids to school.
The tragic teenager had wanted to become a police officer, but her mum said âher dreams would never be realised nowâ.
Women and girls in small town and rural India are often dictated to what they must wear by village heads or family patriarchs.
