Car boot find bullets land man in court
A MAN who bought ammunition at a car boot sale because he 'liked the look of it' did not realise it was illegal to possess it, a court heard.
When police raided Stewart Gibbons' home on March 2 last year they found the bullets under his bed as well as 64g of cannabis, scales, gloves and food bags. Andrew Mackintosh, prosecuting, told Bolton Crown Court that in 35-year-old Gibbons' van officers found another 26g of the drug and snap bags.
Gibbons was originally charged with intending to supply the drug, but tests revealed it was of such poor quality that only part of it was capable of being sold and worth around £500.
Gibbons pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis, on the basis that it was for his personal use, and ammunition.
Mr Mackintosh said a tin contained four 9mm Parabellum bullets, some of which contained propellant.
"No weapon or or other item from which those cartridges could have been discharged was recovered," added Mr Mackintosh.
Tom Watson, defending, stressed that Gibbons, of Chester Road, Tyldesley, has no previous convictions.
Judge Graeme Smith sentenced him to a £500 fine and ordered the drugs and bullets to be destroyed.
"It was very small amount of ammunition and you were probably not even aware that it was live," the judge told him.
