Ottawa has no plans to recognize Taliban as legitimate government of Afghanistan Trudeau

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau said today that Canada has no plans to recognize the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan.

Taliban militants have taken control of Afghanistan after a rapid military advance over the past several weeks, and efforts are underway to evacuate thousands of people trying to flee the country.

"They have taken over and replaced the duly elected, democratic government by force," Trudeau said, noting the Taliban is a recognized terrorist entity under Canadian law.
