The 2m revamp for Bolton Lads and Girls Club will offer much more

YOUTH club leaders have vowed their £2m revamp will see them offer a better service than ever for Bolton.

Bolton Lads and Girls Club officials have been given a sneak peek inside the redevelopment at the halfway stage.

Club bosses announced their building on Spa Road would be closing for a huge refurbishment earlier this year.

Chief executive Karen Edwards and colleagues paid a visit to the Spa Road building and she is impressed with the progress.

Karen said: “We’re over halfway through the £2m refurbishment of our Spa Road Centre.

“The works are going well, and we’ve added a few surprises to the scheme and can’t wait to welcome children and young people back through the doors.

“We hope to have the building back in late spring and are planning a number of opening events and celebrations.”

Karen said the refurbishment will reach even more youngsters.

She said: “June 2022 marks 20 years since we built the Spa Road centre, the first of its kind in the country, and the new Bolton Lads and Girls Club will reach even more of our town's youngsters, at a time when they need us the most.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has supported the refurbishment, raising £2m is never an easy feat. But we have some very generous donors who are committed to ensuring kids in Bolton have the very best opportunities.”

The club released pictures back in June revealing how the new building would look.

The new development will have a new entrance and a modern look inside with upgraded youth facilities, a multi-media studio, a live band practice area and performance and two new studios for sport and dance.

The club dates back to June 1890, and was set up by two church leaders and three industrialists, who wanted to help improve the lives of young people in Bolton.

Since that time, the club has played a pivotal role in the lives of many thousands of young people in Bolton.

Its mission statement is, “to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realise their potential and become happy, responsible and caring citizens.”

Today 6,000 young people’s lives are touched every year by the club's work.
