Wet weather to bring thunderstorms intense rainfall and flooding to Qld

Thunderstorms, intense rainfall and flooding are developing in Queensland as wild weather continues across the state.

The Bureau of Meteorology has released a severe weather warning for the Darling Downs, the Granite Belt, and Maranoa and Warrego districts.

The warning from about 5am on Thursday said a low-pressure system over South Australia was moving into New South Wales, while a trough was heading towards southern inland Queensland.

“An extremely moist air mass will be drawn southwards from the tropics ahead of these features, producing heavy rain areas and widespread thunderstorm activity across the region,” the alert said.

“Conditions will gradually clear from the west of the area early on Friday morning.“

Flash flooding was expected and six-hourly rainfall totals of between 50 and 100 mm were likely.

Storms on Wednesday caused outages and damage to homes in Roma, Ergon Energy reported after sending crews out.

“This pole at Roma had little chance of staying up when you look at the damage to the house in the background,” they wrote on Facebook.
