William Shatner asks what hell do if he needs loo on 11-minute spaceflight

William Shatner has said he’s worried that he’ll need the loo during his time in space â€" even though he’ll only be there a few minutes.

The Star Trek legend is set to fly into space this month on Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin.

The trip will last just around 11 minutes from take off to landing, with those on board spending a few minutes floating around in microgravity.

But Shatner, who at age 90 will become the oldest person to ever go to space, says that can be a long time for someone his age.

The Times reports he asked: “What do the space guys do if they have to go to the bathroom?”

And when reminded of the duration of his journey, he added: “Yeah, but you know, when you’re 90, 11 minutes can be a long time.”

The Captain Kirk star, who said he had prepared for his flight by eating some apple pie, also said: “I’m going to see the vastness of space and the extraordinary miracle of our Earth and how fragile it is compared to the forces at work in the universe.”

It was announced earlier this week that Shatner will be going into space for real, after years of travelling among the stars in a string of Star Trek TV shows and movies.

The tourist spaceflight launch is planned for October 12, and Blue Origin’s vice president of mission and flight operations Audrey Powers will be joining the flight alongside a crew of four.

A live webcast of the mission, called NS-18, will be broadcast, with coverage beginning from 8am ET on launch day.

The iconic actor’s trip into space will mark the second human spaceflight for Blue Origin’s tourism and research rocket New Shepard.

The rocket successfully launched Bezos himself into space on its inaugural flight in July.

Shatner will take the title of oldest person in space from aerospace pioneer Wally Funk, 82, who was one of four crew members on Blue Origin’s first flight.

The short trip sees a rocket carry the capsule up past the US boundary of space, at 80km altitude, where the crew then enjoy floating around in microgravity for a couple of minutes before landing safely back on Earth under a set of parachutes.

Following his own spaceflight, Amazon boss Bezos says that the company has sold almost $100 million worth of tickets.
