  • Australia still hold a 1-0 lead against an increasing desperate Spain at three-quarter time of in their final hockey pool game.

Spain need to take at least a point for a draw from this clash to advance to the knockout phase. However, they are struggling to make inroads against an Australian team which looks sharp and confident.

Tom Wickham’s second-quarter rebound goal from a penalty corner is what separates the teams.

Another crash at the BMX racing - Saya Sakakibara is down and appears to be injured after her final run in the semi final.

A stretcher has been called onto the course after the Australian went down leading the pack into the final turn.

There are a dozen or so officials surrounding the 21-year-old. As she leapt into the final ditch of the concrete course her bike appeared to skid, before another rider landed on top of her.

Sakakibara has just been clapped off the course. She is conscious and had her arms raised above her head but it does not look good for the Australian BMX star.

The mullet is in full flow at the moment, with Cameron Smith making a real statement as Australia chases its first Olympics golf medal.

The Queenslander, who had the letters “AUS” carved into that dodgy haircut before arriving in Tokyo, has posted six birdies through his opening 14 holes in his second round to soar up the leaderboard.

In case you missed our earlier post on the golf - or if you saw it, but just want to see the mullet again - here it is:

Smith (-6) is now three shots behind Mexican Carlos Ortiz (-9), who is still on the front nine.

Big guns Rory McIlroy, who opted to represent Ireland instead of Great Britain, and Xander Schauffele have also joined Smith at six-under in the chasing pack.

While Smith is making a charge, the same can’t be said for Marc Leishman, who has dropped a shot through his first five holes. He’s back at even-par for the tournament.

Play has just been suspended due to inclement weather.

There’s been a bit of a delay in the BMX racing after a horror crash involving Connor Field, the United States’ favourite for gold and the champion from Rio.

Field went down hard in a multi-bike crash, and had at least two other riders and their bikes fall right on top of him.

He had to be stretchered off, hence the lengthy delay. Hopefully he’s all right. That’s an example of how dangerous this sport can be.

Elena Galiabovitch, the Australian shooter whose Olympics preparation was juggled with her frontline work in Melbourne during the COVID-19 pandemic, has only narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final of the 25m women’s pistol.

Galiabovitch, a Melbourne doctor who was one of a small number of athletes asked by the International Olympic Committee to carry the flag in the opening ceremony, finished 11th after qualifying on Friday morning. The top eight progressed to the final.

Galiabovitch recorded a score of 583, only one point behind eighth-placed Korean Minjung Kim.
She said being asked by the IOC to help carry the Olympic flag was a “huge honour”. Galiabovitch worked in COVID wards last year.

The Olympic 100m backstroke champion Kaylee McKeown is safely through to the final of the 200m backstroke, where she will join the fastest qualifier, teammate Emily Seebohm.

McKeown is the fifth-fastest through but the clear favourite for this race. She looked in complete control in her semi-final.

Australia has a 1-0 lead against Spain in its final hockey pool match, courtesy of a brilliant volleyed rebound from Tom Wickham.

Looking to maintain their perfect record, the Kookaburras have looked confident and crisp with their passing game when often faced with all 11 Spanish players behind the ball in their own half.

It was unsurprising that the goal came from one of four penalty corners won by the Australians in the first half. Blake Govers’ drag flick grew a save from the goalkeeper, which bounced out to Wickham, whose quick reactions on his backstick saw the ball in the net after he met it at knee height.

Spain were happy to play on the break and it has been a good test of patience for the Kookaburras, who have remained composed, which will be crucial in the knockout phase.

It’s been all about the kids here in the Tokyo pool but the veterans are standing up today for Australia.

McKeon, 27, and Campbell, 29, have just gone one-three in the 100m freestyle, and now four-time Olympian Emily Seebohm has just taken out her 200m backstroke semi-final and will swim for medals tomorrow.

She almost gave up the sport but now eyes off another bit of Olympic bling.

As is now customary in the Olympics after an Aussie gold medal win, Seven has taken us straight to the winner’s family in Wollongong.

“It’s a dream obviously for her since being a little girl is to go to the Olympics,” said mum Susie. “To come away with that gold medal is amazing. She continues to amaze us.

“She has a beautiful soul, she is very reserved, which most people probably wouldn’t realise. She goes about her business and works extremely hard.

“From when she came home from Rio, really everything has been heading towards this moment and wanting that elusive gold medal in an individual event that she hasn’t been able to get before.”
